Natural Yarn Dyeing

Today my mom came over and we tried dyeing a few skeins with some natural dyes. We used beets, onion skins, red cabbage and tea. For mordants we used alum and cream of tarter (except for the tea I used alum and vinegar) They turned out pretty good except I was hoping the red cabbage would have turned blue like the book promised. The onion skins surprised me the most and I think that skein is my favourite.

  1. Interesting stuff. I love the purple from the red cabbage. One would think that beets would give a vibrant red but I see it's more orange than red.

  2. Wow, I finally came across these naturally dyed skeins you did and they look great. I'd love to experiment with dyeing yarn too sometime.
